Gertie the Dinosaur (1914)

directed by: winsor mckay
lists: total film most influential
genres: animation
traces to: snow white and the seven dwarves, who framed roger rabbit

these first real animated shorts are surprisingly adept - the body forms are consistent, and there's a general freedom of movement and use of perspective that is nicely executed. It even becomes 'roger rabbit' at the end when gertie 'picks up' winsor. cute, experimental fun.

  1. Gertie! Even this film correctly shows her raising her right foot when asked for. In today's films, they would remove or change plot elements that had to do with clarifying someone's left or right side; that requires too smart an audience.
